Environmental Education is a PTA sponsored program designed to help supplement the science curriculum by engaging our children in fun, interesting and educational activities. In the lower grades (K-2) Environmental Education parent volunteers assist children with monthly activities that directly correspond to their unit of study. For instance, if the Kindergarten class is studying insects and spiders they will do activites such as putting a giant puzzle together, fiding out how spiders and insects see, why insects get caught in the web, but spiders do not, etc. For the lower grades (K-2) The EE team have designed ready boxes that contain experiments and activities that correspond to the science unit that the children are studing. This boxes are intended to facilitate our volunteers the visit to the classrooms. In other words our volunteers do not necessaryly have to come up with ideas or experiments of their own. We call this boxes GPS BOXES (since they follow our GPS standards for Science). Instructions for the activites found in this boxes are online. Just click on the green box where it says GPS Boxes to read more about them. In the Higher levels (3-5) EE parent volunteers will aasist in the Science Lab. In all grades Environmental Education provides interesting activities or projects a couple of times thorughout the year. Kindergarten: Reptile Presentation - End of March, each kindergarten classroom will watch a 30 minute reptile presentation given by Ben Team of the Autrey Mill Nature Center. We need one parent to organize these presentations. This includes contacting the speaker, scheduling the classroom presentations, and submitting the bill to the PTA. First Grade: Pollution Puppet Show - End of March, all first grade classes will watch a puppet show about pollution. All materials are provided including the puppets, the stage, and a pre-recorded tape. Parent volunteers from each classroom will move the puppets along with the tape. We need a small committee of parents to organize the schedule of classes, train the classroom volunteers, and set up the stage. All shows take place in one day. 2nd Grade: Butterfly - In April, all second grade classes will be given a butterfly kit with live larvae to watch caterpillars become butterflies. They will then release the butterflies outside. We need one parent to organize the classroom schedules, order the pre-paid kits, distribute the kits to each classroom, and provide the classroom volunteers with instructions. 3rd Grade: Enviroscape - In March, all third grade classes will use an enviroscape model to see how pollution enters into our waterways. We need one parent to organize the schedule of classes, reserve the model, and organize a meeting for the classroom volunteers to be trained by a specialist on how to use the model. 4th Grade: Planetarium - In October, all fourth grade students will see a 45 minute presentation about the planets inside a Planetarium from the Chattahoochee Nature Center. The planetarium will be set up in the Commons. We need one parent to reserve the Planetarium, create a volunteer schedule, submit the bill to the PTA, and attend the presentations. All presentations take place the same day.
