Dolvin's Accelerated Reader (AR) program is designed to promote
reading and to strengthen independent reading comprehension in
grades 1-5. To facilitate participation by all students, kindergarten
uses the program to enhance listening comprehension and to introduce
students to the testing process.
Teachers view the program as instructional support, and
they consider AR points as a supplemental bonus of the program.
The goal of the teachers is to encourage students to read at
a level that is an appropriate instructional challenge and to
utilize the AR test as a comprehension check, much like the check
utilized as a part of standardized testing. Asking students (grade
1-5) to test independently in either the computer lab or the
classroom fosters independence and responsibility. Independent
testing also ensures that students are reading and understanding
what is read. The program is not designed to test listening comprehension
after kindergarten. Therefore, parent assistance should not be
necessary after kindergarten although the computer lab teacher
is available to provide assistance as needed.
Should you have questions about the program in your child's
class, please see your classroom teacher or Sharon Stephens (stephenss@fulton.k12.ga.us),
Curriculum Support Teacher.
